Port of Gaženica: electrical works at the port of Gaženica

Eccos is the main contractor of electrical works at the port of Gaženica, which became a port in 2019

The Zadar passenger port of Gaženica was named the port of the year at the prestigious Seatrade Europe cruise fair held in Hamburg. The port covers 250 000 m² with a total of 3 000 m of operational shoreline and a depth of 13 – 15 m, and since 2017, when it was put into operation, it has recorded an increase in passengers from 20 thousand to over 200 thousand.

The main contractor is the construction company Strabag, and the list of electrical works, i.e. systems that Eccos performed on the project of building the ferry-cruise terminal Gaženica is quite extensive. In addition to solutions in the field of energy, some of the implemented systems at the facility are central surveillance, video surveillance, access control and key management, smart lighting, parking control and payment system, baggage and passenger screening system, alarm and call sound system, variable traffic signals, etc. Most of these systems are related to the security of this critical infrastructure facility.

Energy and IT infrastructure

All implementation details and technical solutions were elaborated in the project design, and complete structural cabling was done, IT network infrastructure was set up, and passive equipment and network switches were delivered. The building has an impressive 400 km of cables and all associated cable shelves and ducts, delivered and installed substations, generators, uninterruptible power supply and about thirty main and a large number of auxiliary distribution cabinets equipped with the latest switching and measuring technology.

Today, Eccos is one of the few Croatian companies that has its own resources to provide a complete electrical engineering service on large facilities and staff to perform all works (design, installation, commissioning, user education, maintenance, etc.) throughout the life of the facility.

Implemented systems

Video surveillance has been installed in indoor and outdoor spaces including a security perimeter around the building with a total of 164 cameras. In addition to enabling IP camera recording and video surveillance control within Epsimax, intelligent video analytics is also supported, which detects breaches in the security perimeter, detection of (abandoned) objects, direction detection and surveillance of unattended luggage.

As this is a passenger terminal, it was necessary to implement a baggage and passenger screening system and a fire alarm, smoke, and gas detection system. Emergency alarm systems and emergency voice communication system (EVCS) use the Epsimax intercom module, which integrates communication and the security system to ensure timely evacuation in case of need.

The specificity of the project is the implementation of a system for displaying passenger and marketing information (LED and LCD information screens) at several locations of the passenger terminal and variable traffic signals at the international vehicle traffic border crossing. Eccos also took care of a centralized server system for parking control and payment with entry-exit columns and ramps and automatic toll booths.

Central surveillance and its graphical display

The implementation of Eccos’ software solution Epsimax enables central monitoring of the safety and security system. Epsimax is the heart of the safety and security system and all connected elements are controlled through its graphical interface. Its application raises the level of safety, ensures a high-quality response to security incidents of personnel who use it and reduces operating costs.

A graphical display of central monitoring on an interactive map is implemented in the application – the map shows the status of all elements on a graphical background in real time and provides an easy way to directly manage all system modules and manage alarm events. Alarm events can be viewed and processed by an unlimited number of operators, and according to a set of predefined parameters, each operator can be shown the procedures to be followed in the event of a specific alarm event.

  1. Since 2017, the Port of Gaženica has recorded an increase in passengers from 20 thousand to over 200 thousand
  2. Complete structured cabling has been laid and a complete IT network infrastructure has been installed
  3. The main contractor is Strabag, and Eccos is in charge of all electrical systems and installations, power distribution, and low electricity installations
  4. An impressive 400 km of cables have been laid in the facility
  5. The port covers 250 000 m² with a total of 3 000 m of operational shoreline and a depth of 13 – 15 m
  6. Thanks to its position, Zadar is the main hub for trips to the northern Dalmatian islands, and is also connected by ferry to Ancona, Italy
  7. Passenger terminal
  8. LED and LCD information screens have been set up to display travel and marketing information
  9. In addition to recording with IP cameras and controlling the video surveillance system, intelligent video analytics are also supported
